Pushplay.com – Why Haven’t They Gotten Oscars?

These actors certainly deserve an Academy Award, unfortunately, they have not yet received one.

Leonardo DiCaprio

It has been said that Leonardo DiCaprio doesn’t need an Oscar because he’s the epitome of an Oscar; however, his performances are so cutting edge and deep that he really does deserve at least one. “I wasn’t surprised that Jamie got the award. But I knew that cameras would be stuffed up my face so I had my response ready. Anyone who says they don’t practice is a liar.” -on losing out on the Oscar to Jamie Foxx during the 2005 Academy Awards. Leonardo is best known for his roles in: “Inception”, “Titanic”, “The Departed”, and “Shutter Island”.

Johnny Depp

For 25 years, Johnny Depp has been soaring in films. Why he hasn’t won an Oscar makes his fans shake their heads. Is the only actor to be nominated for the Oscar in the Lead Actor category in a Disney film – “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl”. Johnny is best known for his roles in: “Edward Scissorhands”, “Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber on Fleet Street”, “Alice in Wonderland”, and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films.

Liam Neeson

Now, this is a shocker. His immeasurable talent goes beyond that of probably any other actor in Hollywood. Although he has won several Tony Awards for his performances on Broadway, he has never won an Oscar. Liam is best known for his roles in: “Schindler’s List”, “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace”, “Batman Begins”, “Taken”.

Brad Pitt

Another brilliant and talented actor who deserves an Oscar. On the Academy Awards nomination process: I’ve been around long enough to know it’s very fickle and it’s a cyclical wheel. But I will say this: it’s surprisingly fun when your number comes up. Brad is best known for his roles in: “Se7en”, “Inglourious Basterds”, “Fight Club”, and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”.

Peter O’Toole

Thirty plus years on the big screen, and the Academy couldn’t see what a remarkable actor he is? Petere has been nominated 8 times for best actor but has never won an Academy Award. He has more nominations without winning than any other actor. “Always a bridesmaid never a bride my foot!” Peter’s response on receiving the “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the 75th Academy Awards on March 23rd, 2003. Peter is best known for his roles in: “Lawrence of Arabia”, “Ratatoullie”, “The Last Emperor”, and “The Lion in Winter”.

Cary Grant

One of the greatest actors of the 20th century, and still no Oscar. It’s inconceivable. Grant was very hurt when he lost his 2 Academy Award nominations, particularly for his role in”None But the Lonely Heart”, which he thought was his best performance. This is why he was so excited when he accepted his Honorary Academy Award in 1970. Cary is best known for his roles in: “North by Northwest”, “Notorious”, “Charade”, and “His Girl Friday”.

You’d be hard-pressed to find better actors than these, but you’ll come incredibly close by getting a membership @pushplay. Visit pushplay.com and instantly stream hundreds of films on your computer or mobile device.

www.pushplay.com – Tuck Bushman

When strange things start to happen in the Yorkshire village of Piddledown Dale, a provincial town in England, the Mayor, Eli Nefarious (Rob Girdler), offers a reward to the person who can capture the culprit. Tuck Bushman (Chris Lumb), an out of work TV presenter and amateur creature hunter, jumps at the chance, but has he bitten off more than he can chew with this unknown offender?

The total production fund was low-budget, at just £625 ($986). Everyone who worked on the film agreed to receive on-screen credits due to the lack of funds. The film and editing equipment was already owned by Lumbfilm Productions, the film’s production company, so these were not included in the production budget, although tape stock and lighting was. The production fund was raised by cast and crew on a monthly comedy show, “The Discount Comedy Checkout”, which the principal cast members of the film perform in.

Not only did Chris Lumb star in “Tuck Bushman”, he is also the writer and director, along with Matthew Hick, who co-wrote and appeared in the film.

Chris Lumb’s favorite films include “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back”, “Dumb and Dumber”, “Ghostbusters”, “Planes, Trains & Automobiles”, “Groundhog Day”, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”, “It’s a Wonderful Life”, “E.T.”, “Back to the Future”, and “Local Hero”. He can impersonate various celebrities including Harrison Ford and Sean Connery. During the filming of “Bend it Like Beckham”, Chris was invited to the set by director Gurinder Chadha to discuss a script idea. A few years before, they had worked on another screenplay together. David is the founder of “The Discount Comedy Checkout”, a comedy club that helped to fund the budget for “Tuck Bushman”. He also started his own production company, Lubfilm Productions. He has also acted in several “spoof” films, including “Die Hard With a Pension”, “Star Pals”, “A Walk to Forget”, and “Hasselhoff Hair Syndrome”.

Matthew Hick is a cast member of “The Discount Comedy Checkout”, which was created by Chris Lumb. Matthew has been working in film since 2008 as the writer of the short film “Bowling for Choc Ices”. He went on to appear in the films “Tuck Bushman”, “A Walk to Forget” and “Die Hard With a Pension”. He has been involved with several Chris Lumb films like “Cheese Perfume”, “Hasselhoff Hair Syndrome”, “The Subliminal Chef”, and “Tuck Bushman”.

“Tuck Bushman” stars Natalie Smeaton and Matthew Jackson.

Natalie Smeaton is also a cast member of “The Discount Comedy Checkout”. She has appeared in several Chris Lumb films, most notably, “Die Hard With a Pension”, “Star Pals”, “Tuck Bushman”, “Sugar and Spice: Yorkshire Vice”, and “Only our Defence”.

Matthew Jackson: Along with his “Tuck Bushman” co-stars, Natalie Smeaton, Matthew Hick and Chris Lumb, Matthew Jackson is a cast member of “The Discount Comedy Checkout”. The four of them, among others, have worked on several films together, including “Bowling for Choc Ices”, “Saturday Night Creature”, “The Informative Adventures of Joe Average”, “Crazy Dave and the Beast of Halifax Manor”, and “Johnny Swift in Dead Lies Don’t Bleed Blood”.

Pushplay.com – Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks was born in California and grew up in what he calls a “fractured” family. His parents divorced and married other people several times, giving him a huge extended family. Growing up, Tom moved around a lot and gained several step-families. There was no abuse, no alcoholism, no problems at all, just confusion. In college, Tom wanted to join the drama club, however, he had absolutely no experience, so he couldn’t even get any parts there. He, then, went to Los Angeles to audition for a community theater play and was invited by the play’s director to head to Cleveland, Ohio to start his acting career. The move worked and his acting career began. On the set of his 1980s smash hit “Bosom Buddies”, Tom met his second, and current, wife, Rita Wilson. She appeared in one episode during the second season. Before marrying Rita, he met and married Samantha Lewis and they had a son and daughter together. They divorced in 1987. The next year, he married Rita. They also have two children and have been blissfully happy ever since. In 1996, Tom took a step behind the camera with writing and directing the film “That Thing You Do!” Tom Hanks is probably one of the best known, and well-liked actors in Hollywood. His career spans more than 30 years and he is showing no signs of stopping any time soon.

Tom is probably best known for his roles in: “The Da Vinci Code”, “Forrest Gump”, “Saving Private Ryan”, and “The Green Mile”.

Some of his other well-known films include:

Splash – 1984

A man is reunited with a mermaid who saves him from drowning as a boy and falls in love not knowing who/what she is.

The Money Pit – 1986

A young couple struggles to repair a hopelessly dilapidated house, which causes tension in their relationship.

The ‘Burbs – 1989

An overstressed suburbanite and his paramilitary neighbor struggle to prove their paranoid theory that the new family in town is a front for a cannibalistic cult.

Turner & Hooch – 1989

A detective must adopt the dog of a dead man to help him find the murderer.

A League of Their Own – 1992

Two sisters join the first female professional baseball league and struggle to help it succeed amidst their own growing rivalry.

Sleepless in Seattle – 1993

A recently-widowed man’s son calls a radio talk show in an attempt to find his father a partner.

Philadelphia – 1993

Apollo 13 – 1995

True story of the moon-bound mission that developed severe trouble and the men that rescued it with skill and dedication.

And, of course, he has been the voice of ‘Woody’ in the popular Dreamworks animated features, the “Toy Story” series. Teaser: It has recently been announced that there will be a “Toy Story 4”, and Tom will, again, provide the voice for ‘Woody’.

pushplay – Nominated, But No Win

Another list of Hollywood’s greatest actors who haven’t yet received an Academy Award. For shame!

Edward Norton

With an illustrious career spanning nearly 20 years, it’s hard to believe Edward Norton hasn’t won an Oscar. Edward is quoted as saying: “Just because you’ve made a couple of movies, you’ve done some good movies, you’ve been nominated for some Academy Awards, whatever, nobody’s entitled. It’s a business. If they don’t see it, I can think they’re wrong, but I’m not entitled to a $15 million budget to make a film.” Edward is best known for his roles in: “Fight Club”, “American History X”, “The Illusionist”, and “The Incredible Hulk”.

James Dean

Hollywood’s iconic “bad boy”. His career was brief, but brilliant. He certainly deserved some sort of recognition. Dean was the first actor to receive an Academy Award nomination after his death, for his role in “East of Eden”. However, he did not win. He was one of only 6 actors to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his first screen appearance. James is best known for his roles in: “Rebel Without a Cause”, “East of Eden”, “Giant”, and “G.E. True Theater”.

Sam Rockwell

Sam has starred in Award-winning films, however, none of his roles garnered him the award himself. His nearly 25 year career has given him recognition for supporting and starring roles, but he has not made mention of being upset that he hasn’t won an Oscar. Sam is best known for his roles in: “Moon”, “The Green Mile”, “Iron Man 2”, and “Frost/Nixon”.

Tom Cruise

Tom has had a long career in films, but has yet to receive that coveted award, despite his impecable acting abilities. For 1988, Tom became the first actor to have the distinction of starring in both the year’s Oscar winner for Best Picture, “Rain Man” and the year’s Razzie “winner” for Worst Picture, “Cocktail”. Nine actors so far have got an Oscar nomination for their role in a movie co-starring Tom Cruise, except Tom, himself. Tom is best known for his roles in: “Top Gun”, “Mission: Impossible”, “Minority Report”, and “Risky Business”.

Robert Downey, Jr.

This man is more than deserving of an Oscar. He has come a long way from being nearly a has-been to turning it all around and starring in some major films. He’s a brilliant actor. In 1992, Downey received an Academy Award nomination, but won the BAFTA (British Academy Award) for Best Actor for his performance in the title role of “Chaplin”. In August of 2008, Downey starred with Ben Stiller and Jack Black in the comedy “Tropic Thunder”, and went on to receive an Academy Award®-nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as “Kirk Lazarus”. Robert is best known for his roles in: “Iron Man”, “The Avengers”, “Sherlock Holmes”, and “Iron Man 2”.

Who else do you think deserved to win an award but didn’t? Let us know in the comments.

Pushplay – Big Stars in Indie Films at Sundance

The Sundance Film Festival plays two major roles for movie fans; it’s where talented, yet still unknown filmmakers, writers and actors can get the recognition they deserve and where previously unreleased films can be discovered by the world. #puhsplay.com

As Robert Redford’s Sundance approaches each year in January in Park City, Utah, there is the anticipation of seeing huge film starts playing roles that are completely out of their comfort zones. Independent films are where famous stars test the waters for roles they may not be given in mainstream Hollywood. They want their fans to be reminded that they are actors and they can play more than just their stereotypical roles by stepping into an independent film.

Following is a list of just a few of Hollywood’s biggest names who have starred in independent films that were presented at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Take note of the films because at some point, they will probably make their way to Hollywood. These actors work hard at their craft and want the public to see that there is more to them than what Hollywood offers them.

“The Words” starring Bradley Cooper, Zoë Saldaña and Olivia Wilde

“The Words” brings together three top name actors who have been breaking records in Hollywood for years. Bradley Cooper is famous for his roles in “The Hangover” and “He’s Just Not That Into You”, Zoë Saldaña has starred in blockbuster hits like “Star Trek” and “Avatar”, while Olivia Wilde can be seen in “Tron: Legacy” and “Cowboys & Aliens”. “The Words” proves that these three actors are more than just Hollywood hype and can bring more to the screen than just blabby, poor character development of a dramatic film.

“Bachelorette” starring Kirsten Dunst

Kirsten Dunst began her career with “Jumanji”, then moved on to “Spiderman”, while riding the wave of stardom in award-winning films like “Melancholia”, which was extremely demanding both physically and mentally. Kirsten is now keeping her eyes on the indie film scene with a “Bridesmaid”-like comdy like “Bachelorette”. Her co-stars, who are just as funny and talented as she, are Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplanand and James Marsden. Fans already know Kirsten is capable of hilarity from her role in “Bring It On”, and this dark comedy will prove once and for all that she is a force to be reckoned with.

“Red Lights” starring Robert De Niro, Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver

What films do you think of when you hear the name De Niro? “Taxi Driver”? “Goodfellas”? Or how about “The Fockers” series? Robert De Niro is quite the versatile actor, and he proves it once again with “Red Lights”. In 2012 alone, De Niro is starring in 4 films, plus this Sundance favorite. “Red Lights” is a paranormal thriller that allows all three talented actors step outside of their normal roles. Who doesn’t know Sigourney Weaver in “Alien”, “Holes” and “Avatar”, just to name a few? Indie films are the best way for famous actors to spread their wings and show off what they are really capable of. This should not be missed once it hits theaters.

Pushplay – Do You Like Foreign Films?

Some people do and some people don’t. In fact, most people don’t and we believe it’s because they don’t want to deal with captions, translations or what seems to be the “inconveniences” of these types of films. Having to understand the culture, history and slang of where the film originated are little conveniences that may get in the way of people of trying out films of another country. Stream and enjoy with pushplay.

Culture and environment plays a big role in whether or not people want to try what’s different to them. If someone is used to pop culture and they like what’s main stream and popular such as the top blockbusters, then it’s going to be harder for this person to enjoy a movie that is so different than what they’re used to. Foreign films are simply that, foreign to them. So the characters, story line, plot, soundtrack, scenery and much more may be too weird, too “not my style” then sadly, these people may never open up their minds to watching some of the most amazing talent on earth.

Yet there are others who just love, love, love foreign films. Sometimes they get bored with what’s on the hottest movies list because these are boring or not mentally stimulating enough. For those of you who don’t like foreign films, we encourage you to give them another shot with an open mind. And for those who adore them, here is a list of some of the most loved foreign films of all times:

The Flowers of War (China)
After falling powerless to the Japanese, a weakened and emotional American young lady (played by actress Christian Bale) is the only thing that gets in the way of Nanking’s invaders and a group of Chinese female students. This movie shows the extremes of the evils of humans and the kindest of humans. This foreign film is unforgettable because it journeys your through insane battles where your every fiber is touched then it lifts you into the most beautiful history, architecture, fabrics and faces ever seen on the planet.

The Artist (France)
Jean Dujardin who, in this film, is a movie star of silent films. He falls head over heels in love with a beautiful young actress but her talking disrupts his movies and his career. This movie is a fusion of love, comedy, fun, charm, creativity and dedication.

Headhunters (Norway)
Living a double life can be hard on a person. As a corporate headhunter who has everything a man could want – a gorgeous wife, beautiful home and a nice life – Roger Brown couldn’t ask for anymore. Yet does ask for more and chooses a night job of being an art thief. His perfect life is devastatingly interrupted when his double life gets him into massive trouble. His art stealing gets him busted and he finds himself in the middle of murder, lies and yeah, we’re saying it… fecal matter. Will he make it out alive? Will he come clean? What will happen to each of his lives? Watch this film from Norway and find out.

Haunters (South Korea)
Having the ability to control others’ minds is a very powerful thing, to put it mildly and as the understatement of the year. In this movie, a man has the ability to do just so. He uses this power of controlling people’s minds for his own selfish gains. Yet fire meets fire when he runs into someone who he can’t control mentally. They entire a twisted, psychic fight of the minds that gives the audience a movie experience that is wicked, exciting, suspenseful and full of action.

Pushplay – Here is a list of current trends of movie websites:

It seems like there’s a trend in just about everything these days. Did you know that even movie websites have trends that are hot and that others want to follow? Yes indeed. Trends exist in the way movie websites are designed and what features they should have. Watch more with pushplay.com

Heavy on the Flash
Movie sites should be very interactive and engage and they should always be changing; very dynamic This is why these types of websites are heavy on Flash. Visitors to movie sites are looking for the movie experience and that is one of entertainment. Flash is required to deliver what these audiences want.

Splash Pages
Before visitors even get to look at the main site, they will usually see a splash page. These splash pages may include options in which online visitors can get to a certain location, country or sections of the sit if the movie is playin gin different locations around the nation or around the world. Some splash pages will have a video which will be of the movie trailer.

Videos and Trailers
As a movie is something that is watched, it only makes sense for movie websites to have videos/trailers. Whether it’s a full trailer or several different trailers, movies have these online. Positioned right on the home page or perhaps on the movie site’s splash page, many trailers just begin immediately without the need for online visitors to click a button or icon for them to start. And in most cases, websites that have sound and video beginning automatically is frowned upon, movie sites are an exception to this rule. It’s because of the nature of the subject. Movies are movies and their purpose to entertain with audio and video. This is expected. Even sites that don’t have their trailer playing automatically or don’t even have a trailer on the home page or splash page normally have a way for the viewer to clink to their movie trailer via a link.

Integrate Social Media
People want to be a part of the movie, its branding and its culture. Social medial allows this. It’s all about the engagement. Pinterest, Facebook, MySpace and many other social networking sites are added to movie websites so that people can follow, like, share, update, refer, tweet, vote and much more. Social media is not just popular with the young crowd these days. All ages engage in social media.

Make Background Images Large
Huge images, photos and pictures work very well in catching attention. In fact, the background of a page for a movie site is one large image or full of several large images.

Stuff for People to Download
Movies are about fun and part of that is being able to give people things that they can download. This also allows for good branding and interaction with those who come to the website. A downloads section is handy for giving visitors posters, icons, wallpaper and even soundtrack ringtones.

Aren’t always on the Company’s Domain
Movies don’t always have their own domain name and own domain. Movie websites are often kept on the studio’s domains and websites. For example, Disney and Fox keep their movies on their domain.

Keeping the page length shorter
The length of the pages are kept shorter so everything is right there and in your face. There’s no need to scroll down, down, down to view more, more, more. Everything is right there for visitors to view. This is really important especially with the use of Flash and videos. Large backgrounds are more effective on short pages too.

So there you have some top trends of movie websites. At pushplay our trend is to make sure that you can easily create an account, browse through the hundreds of movies to choose from, select the one you want, and be watching a movie immediately. Our trend is to keep it fast, convenient and affordable for you to watch as many movies as you wish, anywhere and anytime.

Pushplay – Films We See Today

Some of the greatest and most famous stories of all time have the common thread of being love stories. Whether they turn out tragically, Romeo and Juliet, or whether true love is found and enjoyed, Snow White and her Prince, they stick out in our minds and hearts as great love stories. And for us today, those stories are further immortalized in film. So without further ado, let us explore some of the great love films we see today.
The movie “Titanic” is an epic love story of two star crossed lovers. Though the two young lovers do not end up together, Leonardo DiCaprio’s character dies saving Kate Winslet’s characters life. The theme of love being the greatest joy and greatest sacrifice is an ideal that appeals to each and all of us and supports the purest ideals of Love.
In “The Notebook” we observe the tumultuous relationship of Noah and Allie, beginning with their love at first sight moment and continuing through the rest of their lives. As the story unfolds on the screen it gives us hope that young pup love can turn into an eternal flame. It captures and displays all the emotions we expect out of a good romance; joy and sorrow and a perfect poignant ending.
Who hasn’t watched “Gone with the Wind”? The ultimate classic romance film has entranced many generations of romantic film junkies. Starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, it won multiple Oscar Awards for cinematography, screenplay, and best actress and actor. The story is placed in the south during the Civil War and afterwards during Reconstruction. So in a violent and chaotic place, love seems to blossom, another one of our favorite themes.
“P.S. I Love You” is one of my favorite romantic films. The story explores love and how it can last after death. When Gerry dies of a brain tumor, Holly is forced to try to deal with his death and her regrets. Mysteriously Gerry keeps on sending letters and packages to Holly assuring her of his love and trying to help her transition back into everyday life. It is perhaps the most romantic idea of love, the thought of love stretching across normal boundaries. Also, it helps the Gerry the leading man is played by, in my opinion, one of the hottest men alive Gerard Butler.
If we’re going to list classics romantic films, we mustn’t forget “Casablanca”. Starring Ingrid Berman and Humphrey Bogart, it is set in Africa and is the story of an American expatriate and his old love. Even though it is a classic and was filmed in 1940, it is such a great story that even if you do not prefer old films, this one will capture your heart and attention quickly.
Romance movies captivate something deep inside of us. We love the feeling of hope and of potential love that these movies make us feel. Pushplay understands that.
